What’s your adage?
An adage is defined as, “a proverb or short statement expressing a general truth”. I got mine in graduate school, where I was getting a MFA in book arts but really taking the opportunity to find my creative voice and chart the next chapter of my life. A professor found me laboring over a large mixed media piece and turned his head slightly and said, “sometimes you have to risk it all to gain something greater”. That adage has stuck with me for years, and when I have found myself choosing between the running list of pros and cons in my head, while shushing the still small voice in my gut, I remember it.
I’ve made the decision to close the Taken storefront. I’ve been wrestling with the decision for some time, weighing the pros and cons, talking to people I trust, looking at the economic forecast and thinking about the impact of one small business on so many livelihoods. When in reality, I needed to listen to my gut and make the decision that’s best for me and for my family.
I have no doubt that this announcement will be met with a whole host of emotions for our longtime supporters, friends and makers. Instead of focusing on the emotion of saying good-bye, I am choosing to celebrate what was accomplished.
Having a dream and taking the leap.
Hosting pop up shops at fabulous locations.
Showcasing an amazingly talented array of artists and makers.
Opening a brick and mortar in the midst of a global pandemic.
Growing our customer base, reach and loyal following.
Creating a space where everyone felt welcome.
Helping each of you create a home that reflects you, and your values.
Those of you who know me well, know that my creative spirit is what keeps me going. I have no doubt that the next chapter will be one of new adventures; but for now, I need to get some rest and be present for the people I love.
